The Cervical Disc Replacement is a surgical treatment used for a spinal condition in which the cervical disc start to put stress on nerve roots causing discomfort and neck pain because of a pinched nerve.
The damaged herniated disc is replaced with an artificial cervical disc to restore the motion of the spinal cord. The artificial cervical disc is then fixed in place to promote spinal fusion. In special cases, this procedure also encompasses fusion surgery.
This procedure is also known as cervical arthroplasty.
The procedure produces long term benefits for patients with spinal stenosis and bone spurs.

Who Needs the Procedure
With age and reduced bone health, many people experience neck pain, which is the cause of a herniated or damaged disc.
Many people who experience neck pain are able to acquire relief from their distress through intensive rehab and therapies.
However, when traditional management haven’t resolved the pain, experts may recommend cervical artificial disc replacement surgery.
Symptoms of cervical disc degeneration and disease may include:
• Neck pain and/or stiffness
• Clumsiness or problems with balance
• Pain which radiates to the shoulders or arms
• Weakness in the arms, shoulders, hands, or legs
• Unresponsiveness or tingling in the arms
How is it Performed
The procedure is prescribed by our New Jersey Spine Specialists after a complete medical checkup and detailed study of the patient’s medical history. Many factors are considered by the specialist before the procedure is prescribed. These factors include:
• The lifestyle of the patient
• Health condition
• Anticipated levels of activity after the surgery
The procedure is initiated by our spine surgeons by making a small incision on the front of the neck of the patient, at the level of the damaged disc. After the incision, soft tissues and the muscles of the neck are gently moved away to get a better view of the cervical spine.
The specialists then open the disc space and removes the damaged or diseased disc.
The removed disc is replaced by an artificial disc.
Finally, fluoroscopy is performed, which confirms that the implanted artificial disc is properly placed. In special cases, the use of metal plate or pins is required to encourage spinal fusion. The muscles and soft tissues of the neck and gently replaced to their original location and then the incision is closed.
Cervical Disc Replacement is an alternative to Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion.
