Occupational therapists efficiently help people of all ages with a broad range of conditions, usually, those who face challenges because of a mental health illness, physical or learning disabilities.

What Does an Occupational Therapist Do?

An occupational therapist’s responsibilities include helping patients overwhelm the impacts of disability that occurred due to illness, aging, or accident so they can smoothly do their daily routine activities. He will work closely with patients and consider their physical, psychological, social, and environmental needs. It will make a notable difference to provide people with a new sense of purpose and change the way they feel regarding the future. American Occupational Therapy Association has defined the following responsibilities of occupational therapists:

  • Working closely with the individual and his family to know their exact goals.
  • Design a plan to support people in performing their daily tasks and attain their goals.
  • Examine whether the individual is achieving their aims and make any necessary modifications to the plan, if required.

What to Expect During an Occupational Therapy Appointment

The first thing that your occupational therapist requires is to assess the person’s abilities and aims. The process that they will follow is dependent on the individual’s needs. He will make a start by evaluating the patient’s medical history and ask them questions regarding their daily tasks. The OT may also want to assess the person’s home, school, or workplace for determining any ways to improve them.
Once your therapist is clear about the patient’s current situation and goals, he will make a treatment plan and suggest the usage of special types of equipment. He will assess a person’s progress every week, and /if necessary, he will recommend any changes to the treatment plan at that stage.
Occupational therapists play a significant part and are at the forefront of rehabilitative services. They play their role to achieve social integration and economic participation toward people having disabilities.
